Sustainability
Our Environmental Commitment
At Sturm Foods, we take seriously our obligation to protect the environment and be caring stewards of our world’s natural resources. We do this by continually improving the way we manufacture, purchase and implement new products.
When we promote environmentally-responsible practices, everyone wins – from our customers, consumers and employees to the communities in which we operate. Within those communities we work closely and cooperatively with suppliers and contractors, government agencies and other organizations engaged in improving the environment. And we continually seek new ways to address the environmental cost and impact of our activities, products and services.
What is environmental sustainability?
Sustainability is a buzzword used within manufacturing and other industries, but what exactly does it mean? Sturm Foods defines sustainability as the ability to provide high-quality and compliant products that meet today’s customer needs while protecting the environment for future generations.
Sturm empowers each employee to identify and put into practice smart opportunities to maintain a high level of environmental sustainability.
Environmental Practices
To drive sustainable activities, we work hard to continually improve our products, packaging, processes and personal activities. We call these the “Four Ps.”
We believe that reducing our environmental footprint is the right thing to do and will help our bottom-line growth. We focus on three main areas of sustainability:
1. Purchasing of products and packaging
- Eliminating or minimizing unnecessary packaging
- Purchasing ingredients in bulk handling systems
- Increasing recycled content in our packaging
- Purchasing from local suppliers
- Driving closed loop and return packaging systems
- Offering an organic line of food products
2. Energy, recycling and emissions reduction
- Recycling all office paper, aluminum cans, plastic bottles and ink/toner cartridges
- Sourcing our products and packaging locally, when appropriate, to reduce transportation emissions
- Promoting car pooling and bike-to-work programs
- Upgrading our lighting in our manufacturing and distribution facilities to more energy efficient options
- Recycling our pallet, corrugated and folding cartons, as well as other packaging waste in our facilities
3. Corporate giving and community involvement
- Supporting community events with our time, energy and resources
- Matching employee contributions to approved charities and events
- Providing food disaster relief to victims in our communities and around the world
- Allowing employees time off work to volunteer their time and talents
- Supporting schools and libraries to help with education literacy
